In short: Hillside Accounting Services prepares federal, New York State and New York City income tax returns for individuals, families and self-employed people at 167-13 Hillside Ave, 2nd Floor, Jamaica, NY 11432. We also prepare returns for other states, file past-due returns, amend returns that need correcting, and e-file with direct deposit. You can work with us in English or Bengali (Bangla), in person or by virtual appointment.

Who We Prepare Returns For

  • Employees and families. W-2 income, children and other dependents, education and child care costs, and the credits that go with them.
  • Self-employed people. Sole proprietors, taxi and rideshare drivers, street vendors and other independent workers who report business income on Schedule C.
  • New immigrants. First U.S. returns, dual-status years and ITIN applications. See tax help for new immigrants.
  • People with income in more than one state. We prepare a return for every state you need to file in, not only New York.
  • Business owners. Corporation and partnership returns alongside your personal return. See small business accounting.

Past-Due and Amended Returns

If you missed a year, it's usually worth filing, even late. The IRS says a refund of withheld or estimated tax has to be claimed within three years of the return's due date or it is lost, and the IRS can hold a current refund when its records show an earlier return is missing. Filing and paying sooner also limits interest and late-payment penalties (IRS: filing past due tax returns). If W-2s or 1099s from a missed year are lost, we can help you request your IRS wage and income transcripts to rebuild it.

If a return you already filed was wrong, for example a W-2 was left out or a child wasn't claimed, it is corrected on Form 1040-X. To claim a refund, the IRS says to file the amended return within three years of filing the original or two years of paying the tax, whichever is later. Recent years can be amended electronically; tax years 2021 and earlier, and returns first filed on paper, are amended on paper. You can follow an amended return with the IRS tool Where's My Amended Return? (IRS: file an amended return).

Self-Employed, Drivers and Vendors

If you drive a taxi or for a rideshare app, sell from a cart or stand, or take independent jobs, you report that income and your business expenses on Schedule C. When your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, you also owe self-employment tax. The IRS puts the rate at 15.3% (12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare), and you can deduct the employer-equivalent part of it (IRS: self-employment tax).

The records that make the biggest difference:

  • Every income statement: 1099-NEC, 1099-K from apps and card processors, and a record of cash sales
  • A mileage log or your actual vehicle costs, if you use a car or van for work
  • Phone, supplies, licenses, permits, insurance and other costs of the work
  • Any estimated tax payments you made during the year

No one withholds tax from self-employment income, so many self-employed people pay estimated tax each quarter. We can work out the amounts with you so there's no surprise bill in April.

Common Questions

Can you prepare tax returns for past years?

Yes. We prepare current-year, prior-year and amended returns. A refund on a past-due return generally has to be claimed within three years of that return's due date, so it's worth filing missed years soon.

Do you prepare returns for states other than New York?

Yes. If you lived or worked in another state during the year, we prepare that state's return along with your federal and New York returns.

How long does a tax refund take?

The IRS says it issues most refunds in less than 21 days when you e-file with direct deposit. Paper returns, and returns the IRS stops to review, take longer.

Can I go through my tax return in Bangla?

Yes. Our staff speak English and Bengali (Bangla), so you can ask questions and review your return in the language you're most comfortable with.

Do I have to come to the office?

No. You can come to 167-13 Hillside Ave, 2nd Floor, or ask for a virtual appointment. After-hours appointments are also available.
