In short: If your return is simple and your income is under the limits, free tax help is a good deal. For the 2025 tax year, NYC Free Tax Prep served households that earned $97,000 or less with dependents, or $68,000 or less without, and the IRS says its VITA volunteers generally help people who make about $70,244 or less. A paid preparer makes more sense for self-employment, income or accounts abroad, past-due years, IRS letters and business returns, or when you want the same preparer all year in English or Bangla.

When Free Help Is Enough
Free sites work well for W-2 income, common credits and a straightforward return, as long as you're under the income limit and can make the site's hours. Bring the same papers you would bring anywhere: ID, Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone on the return, all W-2s and 1099s, and last year's return.
When a Paid Preparer Is Worth It
- Self-employment. Drivers, vendors and contractors with expenses, mileage and quarterly estimated tax.
- Income or accounts abroad. Rent, savings or business income in Bangladesh or another country, and the FBAR report for foreign accounts over $10,000.
- A first year in the United States. Resident, nonresident and dual-status rules decide which forms you file.
- Past-due or amended returns, and IRS letters. These take time and follow-up that a seasonal site may not offer.
- Business returns, payroll and sales tax. Free programs focus on individual returns.
- One preparer all year, in your language. If you want someone who knows your file when a letter comes in July, and who can explain it in Bangla.
