Hillside Avenue and the Bangladeshi Community
Hillside Avenue runs through some of New York City's most immigrant neighborhoods. The city's Department of City Planning describes a corridor of majority-immigrant neighborhoods along Hillside Avenue and the Van Wyck Expressway, including Jamaica, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, South Ozone Park, Jamaica Hills-Briarwood, Jamaica Estates-Holliswood and Queens Village.
The same area is home to the city's largest Bangladeshi community. The department's report The Newest New Yorkers (2026 edition, using 2019–2023 census data) counts about 9,700 Bangladesh-born residents in Jamaica, 4,800 in Jamaica Hills-Briarwood and 3,700 in South Jamaica: together, more than 17% of the city's Bangladesh-born New Yorkers. In Jamaica Hills-Briarwood and Jamaica Estates-Holliswood, Bangladeshis were the largest immigrant group, about one-fifth of the foreign-born population (NYC Department of City Planning, The Newest New Yorkers 2026, chapter 3).
